Most people who book a first bespoke suit have never done anything like it before. They’ve bought suits off the rack, maybe tried made-to-measure once or twice, but the idea of a suit built from scratch feels like it belongs to another era — or another income bracket. There’s usually a quiet worry underneath it: that they won’t know the right questions to ask, or that they’ll feel out of their depth.
I want to take that worry off the table. Here is what to expect, start to finish.
It begins with a conversation, not a tape measure
The first appointment isn’t a measuring session. It’s a conversation. When I come to your home or office, we start by talking about what you actually need — the suit for court, the one you wear to close deals, the wedding you’re standing up in. I want to understand your work, your week, and what’s already in your wardrobe before I reach for anything.
There’s no obligation at this stage. Some clients use the first meeting simply to understand their options. That’s fine. I’d rather you commission a suit when you’re ready than be talked into one you’re unsure about.
Choosing cloth is easier than you’d think
This is the part most first-timers expect to find overwhelming, and it’s usually the most enjoyable. I bring the fabric library to you — actual bunches from the mills I work with: Vitale Barberis Canonico, Loro Piana, Reda, Gianvito Milano. You handle the cloth in your own light, not under shop lighting, and drape it against your skin.
And I’ll guide you. If this is your first bespoke suit, I’ll steer you towards a versatile mid-weight navy or charcoal before anything adventurous — cloth that works across seasons and earns its cost through wear. You can read more about the mills and weights I work with, but you don’t need to arrive knowing any of it.
The measurements
Once we’ve settled on cloth and the broad design — lapel, buttons, vents, trouser cut — I take a full set of measurements. Bespoke means I’m not adjusting a stock pattern; I’m drafting one for your body from nothing. So I’m not only measuring chest and sleeve. I’m looking at posture, shoulder slope, how you stand, which side you carry weight on. All of it goes into a pattern that’s yours, and it stays on file for every future commission.
It doesn’t take long. You keep your own shoes on, stand the way you naturally stand, and we’re done.
The fittings — where bespoke earns its name
A first suit usually involves two or three fittings. This is the part off-the-rack and made-to-measure can’t replicate. I bring the suit to you partway built — sometimes basted together in a rough form — and we refine it on your body, in stages. A sleeve pitched a fraction forward, a touch more room through the seat, the collar closed tighter to your neck. Each fitting brings it closer.
This back-and-forth is normal, not a sign something went wrong. It’s the point. It’s how a suit ends up holding its line at 6pm the same way it did at 8am.
The timeline, honestly
A first commission runs about eight weeks from that first appointment to delivery. If you’re working to a hard deadline — a wedding, a swearing-in — I offer a rush at three to four weeks. Every suit includes one complimentary alteration within three months of delivery, because bodies and preferences settle over the first few wears.
Bespoke suits start at $1,095. That’s a real number, and I’ll walk you through what it buys before you commit to anything.
Why doing it at home removes the intimidation
The reason I work as a mobile tailor isn’t only convenience. It’s that the whole thing is simply easier when it happens on your own ground. You’re relaxed. Your wardrobe is right there to reference. There’s no unfamiliar fitting room, no salesfloor, no sense of being sized up. For a first bespoke suit, that matters more than people expect — it turns something that felt formal and intimidating into a normal conversation between two people about a piece of clothing.
That’s really all it is.
