I make custom dress shirts in Toronto the way they were made before sizing charts existed — cut to your own measurements rather than pulled off a shelf and taken in to fit. Neck, chest, waist, shoulder, sleeve, bicep and wrist are all measured and worked into a pattern that is yours alone. And because Willem H Atelier is a mobile atelier, the fitting happens wherever suits you — your home or your office, evenings and weekends included. You don't come to a shop; I come to you with the full cloth library.
The shirts below span four cotton collections, from $145. The Signature Shirt in European cotton is where most clients start — and, honestly, where many happily stay, because it's a good everyday shirt. From there the range runs to a non-iron performance cotton at the same price for constant travel, the Conte di Figli Italian cloth at $175 for something softer with more character, and the Gianvito Milano collection at the top, $220, for a finer, more tightly woven cotton. There is also a dedicated tuxedo shirt for black tie. Which cloth is right for you depends less on price than on how often you wear the shirt and what you wear it for — we work that out at the fitting.
Every shirt includes a monogram at no charge, and the details that make a shirt feel like yours — collar shape, cuff, placket, buttons — are chosen with you rather than assumed. A first commission runs around three to four weeks from the initial appointment, with a fitting before the shirt is finished so the pattern is confirmed on your body before anything is cut. What makes a shirt "custom" rather than off-the-rack?
An off-the-rack "tailored fit" shirt is still a standard pattern, sized only by neck and sleeve. A custom shirt is cut to your own measurements — neck, chest, waist, shoulder, sleeve, bicep and wrist — so it follows your body rather than an average of bodies in your size. Which cotton or mill should I choose?
There are four collections. The Signature Shirt in European cotton suits most everyday wear; the non-iron performance cotton is for constant travel; Conte di Figli is a softer Italian cloth with more character; and Gianvito Milano sits at the top, finer and more tightly woven. The honest answer is that the $145 Signature is a good shirt on its own — move up only if you'll notice and use the difference.
How long does a bespoke shirt take?
A first shirt commission takes roughly three to four weeks from your initial appointment. That includes a fitting before the shirt is finished, so the pattern is confirmed on your body before anything is cut. Once your pattern is established, further shirts from the same block are quicker to make. Every shirt also includes one complimentary alteration within three months of delivery.
Do you come to me for the fitting?
Yes. Willem H Atelier is a mobile tailor — I come to your home or office anywhere in Toronto and the GTA, including evenings and weekends. There is no shop to visit. I bring the full cloth library, take your measurements, and return for the fitting at a time that suits you. The first consultation is free.
Is a monogram included, and what else can I choose?
Yes — a monogram is included at no charge on every shirt. Beyond that, you choose the collar shape, the cuff (button or French), the placket and the buttons. These are decided with you at the consultation rather than assumed, which is part of what makes the shirt yours rather than a size off a chart.
